Statement on antisemitism

The Australian National University condemns antisemitism in the strongest possible terms, as we again reiterated at this morning’s Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights (Antisemitism at Australian universities inquiry).

All claims of racism, including antisemitism, are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. Investigations typically include (but are not limited to) detailed witness statements, interviews, documents, additional video footage or photography, and other substantiating testimony and materials. These investigations give context and nuance that may not be evident from a photograph or video footage in isolation.

Acts such as Nazi salutes or ‘Hitler moustache’ gestures are actions that are abhorrent and offend us all, no matter our religious or cultural background. For our Jewish community, they are particularly egregious and distressing.

“We abhor all types of racism and where incidents have been reported we take them seriously and investigate them thoroughly and take appropriate action,” ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Genevieve Bell said.

“Investigations are always thorough. ANU would never tolerate substantiated incidents of racism, discrimination or vilification. Where we have reports, we take them seriously and investigate.

“ANU is unable to go into further details regarding individual student discipline matters. This would constitute a breach of privacy. We have a duty of care to our students. We have more than 20,000 students at ANU, and each of them has the right and expectation that their privacy will be upheld. No student should be placed under the glare of political scrutiny.

“Our office of Student Experience works closely with our students, and we are always committed to providing support and assistance. This can include access to private quiet spaces, academic or educational supports, and counselling services.”

ANU will continue acting to ensure our campus is a safe place for our community, while also maintaining academic freedoms.

The University has, and will continue to, refer incidents of racism, including antisemitism, to the relevant authorities where applicable.
