Dr Gavin Smith is an Associate Professor in the ANU School of Sociology.

Dr Smith is a sociologist who has eclectic research interests and expertise.

He is an expert in the study of the surveillance capacities of new technologies, specifically exploring the social impacts of different forms of surveillance. He is also actively working in the environmental sociology space, looking at the relations between humans and animals, with a specific focus on the social dimensions of urban wildlife and conservation.

In this regard, Dr Smith is also a snake ecologist and snake conservationist, exploring the movement behaviours and habitat usage of eastern brown snakes on the urban fringe.
