Dr Katharina Bonzel is a Lecturer in screen studies at the ANU School of Literature, Languages, and Linguistics.
Katharina’s research focuses on the intersection of genre, national identity and gender, with a particular focus on visual analysis.
Her recent publications include the monograph “National Pastimes: Cinema, Sports, and Nation” (University of Nebraska Press, 2020) on the intersection of national identity in popular sports films, and the journal articles “Criminal Justice: Televisual Policing in the Post-9/11 Age of Anxiety,” published in the Quarterly Review of Film and Video; and “The Uncanny Heimat: Longing for Home in ‘Barbara’ (Petzold, 2012),” published in Studies in European Cinema.
Her current research project with Dr Claire Hansen investigates “The Heart of the Matter” by researching representations of hearts on screens.
Katharina’s teaching explores topics such as what authenticity on the screen actually means, and how history is represented on screen. She has also provided commentary on pop culture hits such as Rocky, Eurovision and Bridgerton.
