Dr Matthew Sussex is a Visiting Fellow at the ANU Coral Bell School for Asia Pacific Affairs and the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre.
Dr Sussex is a leading expert on strategic policy, with a particular focus on Australian defence policy, Chinese strategic policy, Russian strategic policy, and grey zone/information operations. He has held multiple roles at a range of national and international organisations, including the Australian Defence College and Centre for Defence Research.
He has also been a non-resident Fellow at the Lowy Institute, served on the National Executive of the Australian Institute for International Affairs, and been Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. He frequently consults with Australian strategic policy agencies on matters in his field of expertise, and he is a regular media commentator, both locally and overseas. In 2023 he was nominated for a Walkley Award for his analysis of Australian strategic policy debates and the war in Ukraine.
