Dr Sue Thompson is an Associate Professor and the academic convenor at the ANU National Security College.

Dr Thompson’s main research specialisation examines the history of regional cooperation in Southeast Asia during the Cold War with a focus on foreign and defence policy influences in the post-war evolution of Southeast Asian regionalism. She also covers British defence policy East of Suez during the Cold War, the history of ASEAN and American Cold War policy in Southeast Asia.

Dr Thompson’s recent authored books include British Military Withdrawal and the Rise of Regional Co-operation in Southeast Asia, 1964-73, and The United States and Southeast Asian Regionalism: Collective security and economic development, 1945-75.
